Pet Cremation & Aftercare

After making the difficult decision to euthanize your pet.  You must now decide on the care your pet will receive after its passing  There are many options such as home burial, general cremation, private cremation, pet cemetery burials, or aquamation.

We work with locally owned Cremation and Memorial companies to provide the following services. All services include making all arrangements and providing transportation for your pet.  Here is information regarding the various post euthanasia options.

  • Communal Cremation does not provide your pets ashes back. Pets are cremated communally and their remains are scattered at sea once a month as a final farewell. For more information on this process visit Oceans of Love website: https://www.oceansoflovepets.com/

  • Private Cremation allows you to receive your pet’s ashes back. Pets are cremated in their own individual compartments. Remains are returned to the owner in a cedar urn. A handmade paw print, personalized certificate of cremation and pet loss resources are included with this package. Special order urns are also available upon request. Please visit Terrybear for options on special order urns.  When your urn is ready, your pet will be hand delivered to you personally.

  • Self Home Burial is permitted some locations and differs by County.  Before considering burial, please check with your local codes and ordinances. Many places do not allow home burial.  The Farewell Pet Website can help you learn more about the laws in your state.

  • Aquamation uses water instead of fire in the cremation process.  It yields more of your pet remains that is returned to you. Please go to the bottom of the page for frequently asked questions.

If you would like to work with a specific crematory, please let us know so we can make alternative arrangements directly with your company of choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Aquamation & aftercare cremation options

Aquamation is a water-based pet cremation process also known as alkaline hydrolysis. Aquamation uses the peaceful flow of water, warm temperatures and alkali to mimic the natural decomposition of tissue that occurs after burial. In nature, this process can take years, but with the advancement in the aquamation technology, this process now takes less than 20 hours.

This process involves a trained technician. The technician will combine warm water and a small amount of alkali to wash over the body. After 20 hours or less the components of your pets body will be returned to water as a nutrient rich effluent and only bone will remain. If desired, the mineral ash of the bone will be returned to you. The nutrient rich effluent will be returned to the environment.

When compared to traditional fire based pet cremation, aquamation is considerably more eco-friendly. This process produces 1/10th the carbon dioxide that fire based cremation does, thus significantly reducing your carbon footprint. It also produces a nutrient rich effluent that has been shown to improve the municipality water system as well as the earths soil.

We choose to use aquamation for pets because it is the cremation process that is the most gentle and environmentally friendly option for your pet after death. It significantly reduces emissions of carbon dioxide and greatly decreases the use of energy when compared to fire-based pet cremation.

We use a unique tracking number for each pet that is under our care. Tracking numbers are never re-used. From the moment your pet is in our possession they are assigned this tracking number. This tracking number is on a small metal disc, and it is recorded in a computer software-based system that tracks your pet through each step of the process; intake, aquamation, drying and packaging.
